LATROBE-GIPPSLAND JOBS GROWTH FASTEST IN THE STATE

Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing has welcomed the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data which shows the Latrobe-Gippsland region has the fastest growing regional employment rate in the state.

The ABS Regional Labour Force data shows Latrobe-Gippsland is the fastest growing region for employment in Victoria, with a substantial 14.2 per cent increase in jobs or 16,600 people in the year to March 2017.

In the March quarter alone, employment in the Latrobe-Gippsland region increased by 7,600 people, driven by strong growth in jobs across the manufacturing and retail and trade sectors.

More generally, ABS data also shows regional employment across Victoria remains strong and increased by nearly 24,000 people in the year to March 2017.

By comparison, across the rest of Australia, regional employment decreased by 17,300 people for the same period.

Compared with the three months to November 2014, employment in regional Victoria has increased by 40,600 people.
