REVVING UP FOR WORLD SUPERBIKE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Tuesday February 19, 2018

Maintenance crews are going up a gear to prepare the roads and roadsides ahead of the 2018 World Superbike Championships at Phillip Island, from Friday 23 February to Sunday 25 February.

Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing today announced VicRoads have been inspecting and repairing the main roads to Phillip Island, with thousands expected to ride down for the race.

During the past couple of weeks, maintenance crews have been inspecting and repairing roads by removing loose stones, litter and other hazards to improve safety for motorcyclists.

The ‘blue line’ treatment will be in place on the afternoon of Sunday 25 February, which will temporarily split the outbound lane of Phillip Island Road into two lanes to allow traffic to flow quicker and safely.

The treatment will begin at Phillip Island Road and Back Beach Road intersection, and will continue through San Remo to end at Anderson Link Road.

Mowing has taken place along areas of the South Gippsland Highway, Anderson Link Road, Bass Highway, Phillip Island Road and Back Beach Road.

The street sweepers will also be operating on the Bass Highway, Anderson Link Road, Phillip Island Road, Back Beach Road, San Remo Bridge and along the Bunurong Road bike lane from Wonthaggi to Cape Patterson.

Drivers are advised to pay attention to changed travel conditions, keep as much space between vehicles and allow extra time to arrive to their destination.

Quotes attributable to Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing:

“The Island and surrounding areas will soon play host to one of the biggest superbike events on the calendar, and once again, crews have been hard at work to make the roads as safe and well-maintained as possible.”

“To improve the flow and safety of heavy traffic during this peak visitor period when blue lines are operational, it’s important that drivers of large vehicles don’t damage road shoulders by using the outer left lane.”
