New flashing speed signs have been installed outside Poowong Consolidated School to improve safety for students and parents.

Member for Eastern Victoria Region, Harriet Shing said the Andrews Labor Government provided $80,000 to replace the current static speed signs on Drouin-Korumburra Road (Ranceby Road) and Gardners Lane with three electronic signs.

Following strong community support, the new signs will better alert drivers to the 40km/h speed limit during school times.

Poowong Consolidated is one of the first schools to benefit from the safety upgrade, with more set to follow later this year.

The area has a history of drivers speeding on these roads, especially during school drop-offs and pick up.

The upgrade is part of the Labor Government’s $5 million investment into school crossing improvements and electronic variable speed limit signs on high risk roads.

The Labor Government has also invested a further $18.9 million to ensure the successful school crossing supervisor program continues to improve safety in 2018/19.

A recent review by Transport for Victoria found supervised school crossings were an effective and cost-efficient way to improve safety around schools.
